Honor Our Veterans on November 11th!

Happy Veterans Day
November 11th is a day to commemorate and honor the men and women who chose to serve in the military.

You might be surprised to know that TCC maintains a full-time office of Veteran Services at Metro Campus with additional special resource centers at each campus for academic use by veterans.
Check TCC’s page for Veterans and the Military for more information.

Also, West Campus Student Activities created this video "Celebrate and Honor all Veterans with TCC Employees". Watch it here!  http://www.tulsacc.edu/Vet

In honor of the veterans, the TCC Library has prepared a Veterans and Military Resources Guide with links to websites and local resources on U.S. military veterans throughout history.  It includes a brief list of TCC Library resources including books, videos and information databases (Ebscohost’s Military and Government Collection and Oxford Reference Online with topic pages on veterans and related issues).

Thank you to all the veterans and Happy Veterans Day!

See Research Day Workshop Videos!

On September 19th Tulsa Community College Honors Department hosted their second annual Research Day Seminar.  The two morning presentations tackle the six-step research process, research opportunities at TCC, tools used for research, and an introduction to copyright law and citation tools.  The afternoon sessions feature a panel of local experts discussing research in the field, and a student panel.  These videos are a great introduction into the professional world of research.

Have a Happy Columbo Day on Oct 13th! Oh, and one more thing...

Have a happy Columbo Day on October 13th! Oh, and just one more thing…

Should you happen to find yourself close to a TCC library and are in the mood for a mystery or thriller, I’ll spoil the ending: you won’t be disappointed!  The library has an excellent selection of both classic and new mysteries sure to leave you deep in suspense!

Are you in the mood for a classic mystery?  Some works, such as the novels of Agatha Christie or the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle never go out of style.  In fact, Sherlock Holmes is enjoying something of a renaissance presently thanks to TV shows like Sherlock and Elementary.  Check out the stories and get a peek at the source material those TV writers are most certainly raiding for script ideas!

For a modern mystery, try Tana French’s The Likeness or Lee Child’s Killing Floor.  French’s novel follows the main character, Detective Cassie Maddox of Dublin’s murder squad as she investigates the murder of a woman who appears to be her double.  If you are interested in a series, Child’s novel is the first of the Jack Reacher series.  Follow Jack as he clears his name of the crime of murder… on the edge of your seat!

You can search for current and popular titles in the library catalog, or stop in and browse the mystery displays at the Southeast and Northeast library, the true crime section at West, and the new leisure reading section at Metro.

Discover formerly forbidden literature at Banned Books discussions

What do Harry Potter, the Bible, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian all have in common? They’ve all been banned or challenged in libraries, schools, or colleges. Join the library as we celebrate the freedom to read by hosting two panel discussions on banned books.
Take an eye-opening look at the history of banned and challenged comic books and graphic novels from the 1940s to today at “SuperBad: Banned Comics We Read Anyway.” This event is 11 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept. 22 in room 9100 on the TCC Southeast Campus.
A panel discussion featuring TCC faculty and a special surprise guest will share banned books that have influenced them and why the freedom to read is vital to an educated society. “Banned Books and Naughty Novels: Forbidden Literature That Shaped Our Development” is 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 in the Student Commons on the TCC Metro Campus.
