TCC Library helps celebrate American Presidents

In February, we celebrate American Presidents.  Use the TCC Library website (http://library.tulsacc.edu) to find the print and electronic resources (e-resources) to help you learn about and celebrate the President of the United States (POTUS).

If you browse the more than 400 books in the TCC Library catalog about the President, you will find biographies by Pulitzer Prize winning authors David McCullough (John Adams, Truman) and Jon Meacham (American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power) and autobiographies by Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. There are books written by Presidents (Profiles in Courage, John F. Kennedy; Audacity of Hope, Barrack Obama).  There are more than two dozen books about Abraham Lincoln and a critically-acclaimed, four-book series about Lyndon Johnson by Robert Cato, (including Master of the Senate).

Library research guides about American History and American Federal Government provide many links to resources about POTUS.

EBSCOHost Military & Government Collection and Issues & Controversies in American History are two Library databases contain a wealth of information about the Presidents and the issues they faced in office.

Two digital libraries with treasures of knowledge about Presidents is American Memory by the Library of Congress (including the papers of several Presidents) and Smithsonian Institution Libraries (a digital collection of 1.5 million books and manuscripts about all aspect of American History).

Use the Quick Search tool at the Library homepage to browse for books. Use the yellow Research Guides tab or the yellow Article Databases tab at the Library homepage to access the research guides or the databases, respectively. Use the yellow Books and More tab (then click on the Digital Libraries link) to access digital libraries.

Discover New Books in the Library!

The TCC Library is adding lots of new items to its collection every week! To help you discover these new books, we have a new search tab titled "New Books" in the library catalog (last tab on the right). It allows you to search for new library materials within all locations, or one location only, or just e-resources that have been added to the catalog.  The list of new titles is updated every day. See a sample of our new titles below:

Tip: Leave the search box blank, and this setting will just retrieve a list of  ALL the new books recently added to the collection.

Wed. Jan. 29 Get a library card from Tulsa's public library!

The Tulsa City-County Public Library (TCCL) is coming to TCC to offer free library cards to students, staff and faculty. TCCL volunteers will be on each of the four TCC Library locations to issue library cards on the spot from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

A TCCL library card provides access to hundreds of thousands of books and online resources for free. You can also download and keep new music from Chopin to Daft Punk, Jimi Hendrix, Journey, Miley Cyrus and more!

Not a resident of Tulsa County? Not a student but you work here? Not a problem! Full-time students and employees at a college or university in Tulsa County meet the residential requirements for a public library card.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

We celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday in January. The Library website (http://library.tulsacc.edu ) contains printed and electronic resources (e-resources) that demonstrate the impact this great American and Nobel Peace Prize winner had on our country and the world. 

 More than 100 books and videos in the Library collection focus on Dr. King--including several biographies and books about King’s use of non-violent civil disobedience to gain civil rights, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (the major civil rights organization he lead), and books about his impact on American society (e.g. three books by Pulitzer Prize winning author Taylor Branch) 

At History & Politics Out Loud, a TCC Digital Library resource at the Historical Voices Gallery, you can Hear Dr. King speak--including the I Have a Dream speech and the famous drum major for justice speech.

Included among the more than 1.1 million images at the ARTStor database are photographs of civil rights marches in the 1960’s which Dr. King organized.

Welcome Back & upcoming library events!

We have two upcoming library events this semester to announce:

Tulsa City County Public Library Card Drive

On Wednesday, Jan. 29th, at all TCC campus libraries, you can meet with librarians from Tulsa City-County Library (public library) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It's a great time to sign up for a public library card! You can learn about TCCL's resources and services for the whole family.

With a public library card, you can expand your access to their resources and get check out privileges to books, ebooks, magazines videos, and music!

Blind Date with a Book

In February, you can participate in Blind Date with a Book in which you tell us what book you like and we'll pair you with an attractive single book in your area of interest. It's a blind date so you could be paired with a detective, an actor, or scientist intent on saving the world!

Library, Chat & Email Services Change Hours for Intersession

During Intersession (when classes are not in session), TCC's Library will change its service hours beginning Dec. 16th - Dec. 23rd, 2013 and Jan. 2 -12, 2014.

Hours of Operation during Intersession:
Open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Closed Saturday and Sunday.

The library staff will continue to answer questions submitted via email during Intersession. 

Chat service will be closed during Intersession and reopen on Jan. 13th, 2014.

The Library plus chat/email services will be closed for the Winter Break, Dec. 24, 2013 - Jan. 2, 2014.

The Library returns to its normal semester hours on Jan. 16th, 2014.

Greeting from Tech Support! This is just to let everyone know that there are no known issues with access to our online resources. However, I wish to explain an issue, which has come up a couple of times recently but does not appear to be an issue on the library’s end of things. Some users have had trouble accessing content from off campus when trying to access from their place of work, although they are following all the correct procedures. We can only assume this is due to firewall settings in place on the network at the work location. These users have had no problem when later accessing the content from home. JSTOR in particular has had an issue with this. Here are a couple of other tips if you are having problems connecting: Try a different browser. Generally speaking, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer should work fine, but it doesn’t hurt to try a different one if you have problems. We have had reports of problems with library patrons using Safari in the past. It also sometimes helps to delete cache and cookies. Be sure you are selecting your database from the library’s list of databases after logging into Blackboard. Our list of databases is here: http://library.tulsacc.edu/content.php?pid=212569&sid=3433409. Going directly to the database will not work. For example, typing : http://www.jstor.org/ will not work, but you will be able to get to articles by clicking on the link from our database page.
