November 11th - Honor our men & women who served in the military on Veterans Day!

  November 11 is Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor the men and women who have served our country in the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, and Air Force.

Many communities have special activities planned, such as parades and festivals, and often families have their own traditions in place to honor their loved ones who have served. Whether you participate in these types of events or not, this is a good time of year to learn a bit more about our veterans and remember those who have sacrificed for our country.

 The TCC Library has created a Veterans Research Guide with links to websites and local resources on U.S. military veterans throughout history.  It includes a brief list of TCC Library resources including books, videos and information databases (Ebscohost’s Military and Government Collection and Oxford Reference Online with topic pages on veterans and related issues). Other resources on the guide feature government websites, archives, military collections, and video clips on war memorials.

Known Issue: EBSCOhost Databases (Updated 3/28)

Update: As of Wednesday morning, March 28, EBSCOhost databases are working again. If you have trouble using them, or have more questions, please contact us.

Users on and off campus are reporting intermittent problems using EBSCOhost databases such as Academic Search Premier and CINAHL (see below for a full list); EBSCO was performing some maintenance this morning, and it seems to have affected the databases. They say:

Due to routine maintenance currently underway, we are experiencing temporary service interruptions for EBSCOhost and EDS users. We apologize for this inconvenience and assure you that our engineering team is working on this top priority to restore service as soon as possible.

Please contact us if you have questions, or to ask a librarian for help identifying databases with similar material. When we have more information, we will post it here.

Earth Day

April 22^nd is Earth Day, a international celebration of our green and blue planet. The LRC has some great resources to help you understand more about earth and environmental sciences:

Science Direct is an online database that includes ten million full text articles from 2,500 scientific, technical and medical well respected, peer reviewed journals.

GreenFILE, an EbscoHost database, offers articles about climate change, sustainable building, waste management, energy practices and agriculture and pollution.


If you’re looking for an introduction to these topics, Facts On File Today’s Science is a great place to start for a student-focused look at scientific disciplines. In addition, they provide access to a glossary of scientific terms and a science encyclopedia to help get you started and provide quick answers when you have questions.

On the Earth Day website, you can learn more about what you can do to preserve the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil we depend on to grow our food. In addition, the LRC has created an Environment research guide to help you find more of our library resources.

As we all stop to consider our impact on the environment this month the Learning Resources Center wants you to know about a great resource provided by Ebscohost: Greenfile.

"Focusing on the relationship between human beings and the environment, with well-researched but accessible information on topics ranging from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources and beyond.
